The Blue Lagoon: Is it Worth It?

When you think of Iceland, one of the first things you probably think of is the Blue Lagoon, a warm pool with milky blue water and beautiful views of Iceland’s surrounding mountains. When I began planning my Iceland trip, I quickly learned that some people choose to forego this stop on their itineraries because it can get incredibly crowded and it’s expensive. There are also many other geothermal pools in Iceland such as the Secret Lagoon, a much cheaper ($28/person) and more off-the-beaten path favorite of tourists opting to skip the Blue Lagoon.

My then boyfriend and I decided to book the Blue Lagoon after all, so here are some of my thoughts on the experience and if it truly is worth it.

The Price

The Blue Lagoon now costs about $100 per person. When you book your ticket, you do have choose an arrival time, but once you’re in the lagoon, you can stay as long as you want. I think we probably only ended up spending 2-3 hours there just because it does get quite warm sitting in the pool, and how long do you want to just sit in the water anyways?

The ticket does include one free beverage, so that was nice. Keep in mind that a drink in Iceland (even a beer) can cost you $15 or possibly more. That was the only other thing we purchased while there. They do have some food options, but those are pretty pricey, even for Iceland’s standards.

Crowds

The Blue Lagoon can get quite crowded. Luckily, the lagoon is quite large, but people will still be everywhere. It’s best to go later in the afternoon or the evening to avoid peak hours. We went at 3 p.m., and it wasn’t too bad. We also went in March, which probably helped since it’s not peak tourist season.

If price isn’t an issue for you, then you can certainly avoid crowds by splurging on a $661 ticket that gives you access to a more secluded lagoon!

The Verdict

In the end, I absolutely think the Blue Lagoon is worth a visit at least once since it is such a token experience in Iceland! The milky blue water is unlike anything you’ll find in other geothermal pools throughout the country, and it’s such a fun experience. I’m sure I would’ve felt some major FOMO had I chosen to not visit the Blue Lagoon.

That being said, if I visit Iceland again, I think I’ll choose to visit the Secret Lagoon for it’s lower price point and lack of crowds. Now that I’ve done the Blue Lagoon once, I don’t feel the need to do it again.
