10 Delicious Meals on the Camino Francés

One of the best parts of hiking the Camino Francés is that you can eat every single meal in a restaurant if you’d like. The Camino isn’t like typical backpacking where you have to carry everything with you because you pass through towns all along your journey. Here are 10 delicious meals on the Camino Francés that I absolutely recommend.

Large bocadillo sandwich and a beer in Pamplona.
I’m STILL dreaming about this bocadillo from Casa Bar Jesús Mari in Pamplona. It was truly next level and puts most U.S. sandwiches to shame.

1. The best bocadillo at Bar Casa Jesús Mari, Pamplona

This isn’t one of your one ingredient Spanish bocadillos (don’t get me started on that lol)! This restaurant has a whole menu of different bocadillos with a variety of toppings.

Each sandwich is also quite large. It was absolutely perfect for me after a long day of hiking and definitely one of the most delicious meals on the Camino Francés.

Burger with beer in Agés along the Camino Francés.
Loved my burger and the vibes at La Rústica Caravan Bar.

2. Burgers at La Rústica Caravan Bar, Agés

I don’t know what it is about burgers on the Camino, but they’re often different from in the U.S., and I don’t typically like them as much. La Rústica Caravan Bar is different.

They have a number of delicious burgers that are more like what I’m used to in the U.S. It’s also a very cute restaurant with a cool indoor/outdoor vibe.

Four small sandwiches on a plate with chips and a tinto de verano at 100 Montaditos in Burgos
I will ALWAYS go to a 100 Montaditos when in Spain. It’s fast, easy, fun to try so many sandwiches. Plus it’s cheap and pretty good!

3. Montaditos (mini sandwiches) at Cien Montaditos, Burgos

This is a Spanish fast casual chain, but it’s so wonderful. When I saw there was one in Burgos, I made a point to go there.

They have over 100 montaditos (tiny sandwiches), hence the name, so there’s something for everyone and it’s fun to try so many different options. Each order comes with free chips. Beer and tinto de verano are on tap and only cost something like 2 euros.

Cien Montaditos is a very affordable and easy option. It’s absolutely a must when looking for delicious meals on the Camino Francés.

This restaurant is all over Spain and can be found in most big cities. I went to the one in Burgos and then in Santiago de Compostela when I finished the hike too.

Bowl of ramen at Udon in León.

4. Asian food at Udon, León

Sometimes you just need to change it up after eating the same old thing day after day. This is another chain, but it was so good I went twice (in León and again in Santiago de Compostela).

This restaurant typically has a variety of options, including ramen, pad thai, and other noodle dishes.

Variety of tapas on a platter with a sangria.

5. Variety of tapas at El Patio, León

The outside of this restaurant is full of plants and has such a cool vibe. The food was fairly good—with a variety of tapas, not all of which were Spanish. I ordered Spanish croquetas but also mini empanadas and spring rolls.

Large margherita pizza with three aperol spritzes
Some of the BEST pizza I’ve ever had in Foncebadón.

6. Drool-worthy pizza at Pizzeria L’isola Che Non C’è, Foncebadón

Even though Foncebadón is one of those tiny towns that only exists because of the Camino, this is some of the best pizza I’ve ever had.

Run primarily by Italians who know how to make great pizza, this restaurant is a MUST visit and definitely high on my list of most delicious meals on the Camino Francés.

Note that this restaurant was formerly known as Pizzaria Foncebadón.

Toast and coffee on a deck ledge outside with a view of the sun rising over the mountains along the Camino de Santiago
Enjoying the most dreamy breakfast shortly after the Cruz de Ferro.

7. Breakfast at Café Bar Manjarín, Manjarín

Not long after reaching the Cruz de Ferro, I recommend stopping at this roadside cafe for breakfast. This was the dreamiest view I had during a meal on my whole Camino trek.

I watched the sun rise over the mountains while eating my tostada con tomate y aceite (tomato and olive oil toast), sipping a café con leche, and listening to good music. At one point the owners’ sweet dog came out for pets too!

Enchiladas verdes at El King Kong in Ponferrada, Spain.
El King Kong in Ponferrada has some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in Spain.

8. Mexican food at El King Kong, Ponferrada

Don’t let the weird name fool you. This restaurant has pretty good Mexican food!

The menu was limited, but we all loved what we got. The margaritas and burritos were delicious and really satisfied my craving for Mexican food that always pops up whenever I leave the U.S. 😀

Large salad with lettuce, tomatoes and white asparagus
Probably the best salad I’ve ever had at Viña Femita in Villafranca del Bierzo.

9. Pilgrim meal at Viña Femita, Villafranca del Bierzo

If you read my post on the best albergues on the Camino Francés, then you know this one is a standout. Their dinner was absolutely part of that with one of the best three course meals I’ve ever had. I specifically remember having the most delicious, refreshing salad and I’m not usually a huge salad person.

Steak with red wine along the Camino Francés in Gonzar, Spain
The BEST meal I had on the Camino at Casa García in Gonzar. You HAVE to eat here!

10. Pilgrim meal at Casa García, Gonzar

Hands down, this was the BEST dinner I had on the Camino. We started out with lentil soup, followed by steak and then a dessert.

All of the food was absolutely divine, plus they kept offering us seconds. I think it’s run by a family, and they seem to really care about giving pilgrims a lovely meal and experience.

If you eat at only one of the places on this list, EAT HERE!
