A Week in Paradise

The beaches at Krystal Cancun

Two weeks ago, I was lucky enough to spend one of my last college spring breaks in paradise – soaking up the sun in Cancun, Mexico, with my little and best friend. With so many places to stay in Cancun, choosing the right hotel can be a daunting task. I certainly felt very overwhelmed when I first started looking into resorts. Luckily, I ended up loving my stay at the Krystal Cancun and thought I’d share more about this resort.

1. The beach was one of the most beautiful that I’ve ever seen.

This statement says a lot for me, as I used to live in Florida and had also stayed at a resort near Cancun two years before. But the beach at Krystal Cancun was incredible. Between the fine white sand and the multicolored ocean that turned from dark blue to a bright turquoise, the beach was much more than I had ever expected. I’d say that compared to other resorts, Krystal also has a longer stretch of beach than most, so there’s always room to put down a towel and soak up some rays. My friend and I could always find a spot in the sand, even during spring break at the second most popular college spring break resort.

2. The value is hard to beat.

To put it one way, my plane ticket cost more than four nights all-inclusive at this resort. It was so cheap! And while it may not have had as many of the amenities as other resorts (like nightly shows, for example), it had everything I needed – free food and drinks, fresh towels, sun and sand. If you want to see nightly shows or go clubbing, there are tons of options for you with just a three-minute walk! The only downside to this is that the clubs can be loud some nights, although I only heard them once during the whole spring break (strangely on Wednesday night). Even the bed was amazing – so comfy (especially compared to the rock hard beds at the Barcélo) and huge! The WiFi also wasn’t too bad and was free, unlike many other resorts.

3. The service is pretty good (especially if you tip!)

At times the service was arguably better than it had been at the nicer resort that I had stayed at with my family previously. Getting our room didn’t take very long, although if it’s your first time traveling outside of the U.S., understand that things won’t be as prompt. If the website says check in begins at 1 p.m., that doesn’t mean your room will necessarily be ready by then. But don’t sweat it! You’re on vacation, and the bellboys will take your bags. Relax by the pool or on the beach until your room is ready. With respect to service, also be sure to tip – especially at the bar – if the bar is busy, then the bar tenders will serve you much faster if you tip them (It also helps if you use any of your high school Spanish skills).

4. You can get anything you want out of it.

Krystal is really in the perfect location. Not only is it close to the airport, but it’s in the perfect location for whatever you want to do. Do you want to relax? It’s no problem – relax! Do you want to party hard at the clubs? They’re only a three-minute walk away. Wanting to explore some Mayan ruins? There are tons of excursions for you to choose from. You can really get anything that you want out of your stay at Krystal.

5. The food is good if you know what you’re doing.

Some of the food, as another person staying at the resort told me, is practically “dog food.” But once you figure out the best places on the resort to eat, the food is pretty good. The breakfast buffet that’s outside in the restaurant that later becomes the Italian restaurant for dinner is best for breakfast. There’s even a delicious made-to-order omelet station. This restaurant also has the better lunch buffet, although the best place for lunch is the seafood snack place. If you’re not a fan of seafood, then don’t fret (I’m definitely not a fan myself.) – this place has great burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders and fries. For dinner, make reservations at the Mexican and Italian restaurants! The Mexican restaurant was my favorite, although both were good. For the Mexican restaurant, make your reservation as soon as you wake up in the morning and you should be fine. For the Italian restaurant, make your reservation the morning of the day before you want to go. These restaurants are included in the all-inclusive plan and give you so much more than you could get from the buffets.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend Krystal Cancun. It was a great resort and at a great value!
