Fastest Way to Get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
The fastest way to get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is by traveling from Biarritz or Pamplona. From Biarritz, it’s about 30 minutes to Bayonne and from there about an hour on the train to SJPDP. From Pamplona, it’s about a 1.5 to 2 hour bus ride to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
Best Way to Get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
There’s not necessarily one best way to get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. It depends on what you want to do before and after the Camino and how much you want to spend.
Flying into Madrid or Barcelona and then continuing on to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port through Pamplona is probably easiest and fastest, especially if you’re trying to book round-trip tickets. However, those aren’t the only options.
I personally flew on a one-way ticket to Bilbao, Spain so I could spend some time eating good food and relaxing on the beach in San Sebastián, Spain before my Camino.
Best City to Fly In and Out of for the Full Camino Francés
If you’re looking to book round-trip flights for your Camino, then you’ll also want to think about how to get back to the airport after you hopefully finish in Santiago de Compostela.
If you’re tight on time before and after your Camino de Santiago, then I recommend booking your round trip tickets out of Madrid since it’s the most centrally located between both Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Santiago de Compostela.
Alternately, you might look to see if you can get cheaper round-trip flights through London. From London, you can plan to take a flight to Biarritz to get to the start of the Camino. After your hike, you can fly back to London easily from Santiago de Compostela.
If you have more time before and/or after your trip, you can be a little more flexible. For instance, you might travel down to Porto or Lisbon after you finish your Camino before flying back to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, or wherever you booked your round-trip tickets.
Tip for Your Journey to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
As you’ll see in this article, getting to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port requires multiple legs of travel. With that in mind, I recommend you spend at least one night somewhere on your way to SJPDP. This will help break up the travel and also mitigate risk of missing any booked transportation due to travel delays.
You’ll likely fly into a large city, such as Paris or Madrid, and I think that’s a great place to spend one day getting over jet lag and giving yourself some buffer time before you continue on. From those cities you’ll likely need to book your transportation in advance, so any travel delays could add challenges. Giving yourself that night in between if possible will help.

How to Get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port from Biarritz
Biarritz has the closest airport to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. For that reason, traveling from Biarritz on to SJPDP is one of the most popular ways of getting to the start of the Camino Francés.
From the Airport
If you’re arriving to Biarritz by plane, your first step will be taking a bus to the Bayonne train station. After you grab your luggage at the airport, head outside and look for TXIK TXAK bus #3 or 4 to Bayonne.
The bus ride is about 30 minutes and buses seem to run fairly regularly. If you take the 4, get off at Alsace Lorraine and walk three minutes or so to the train station. If you take the 3, get off at Place des Basques and walk about 17 minutes to the train station.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi from the airport directly to the Bayonne train station if you’d prefer.
Walking to Bayonne is another option if you’re feeling like getting into the spirit of the Camino de Santiago a bit early. From the airport, the walk is a little under 4 miles (6 km).
Once you arrive at the Bayonne train station, you’ll need to hop on a train to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. There are around 30 trains per day, and the journey lasts around an hour.

If you don’t want to worry about the hassle of navigating public transit, you can book a private transfer straight from the airport to SJPDP via Express Bourricot.
From Town Center
If you’re in Biarritz proper and not the airport, you’re best option is taking the train.
First, from the city center, grab a taxi or hop on TXIK TXAK bus #5 or 38 to get to the train station. If you take the bus, get off at Gare de Biarritz.
There are numerous trains from Biarritz to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port with a transfer at Bayonne each day. The journey to Bayonne lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, and then the journey onwards to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port from Bayonne is about an hour.
TXIK TXAK bus #6 is also an option to get from the Biarritz to the Bayonne train station. However, I recommend taking one of the trains instead of the bus as they’re a bit faster. Taking the train helps keep the journey a bit simpler too since you’ll need to take a train onto Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
If you feel up to it, there’s the option to walk to the Bayonne train station and then continue on to SJPDP by train from there. From the city center, it’s about 5 miles (8 km).
For an easier journey, you can book a private transfer with Express Bourricot to go straight to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port from the Biarritz train station.

How to Get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port from Pamplona
Many people choose to get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port by traveling through Pamplona, myself included!
I personally chose this way because I wanted to spend some time in northern Spain before starting my Camino. Traveling through Pamplona was one of the easier ways for me to get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port from there.
From the Airport
If you arrive to Pamplona by plane and wish to continue straight on to SJPDP, your best option is to get to the bus station in the city center.
It seems there are no longer direct buses from Pamplona airport to the bus station, so I recommend grabbing a taxi. From what I hear, they’re fairly affordable and not too overpriced there.
If you’re feeling like stretching your legs after your flight, you could also walk to the bus station. It’s almost 4 miles (6 km) away and the walk should take about 1.5 hours or so. Here’s the link to the Pamplona bus station on Google Maps–note that it’s underground.
Keep reading below for more information on getting to SJPDP by bus.
If you don’t want to travel onto SJPDP via bus, you could take a taxi or private transfer instead, but it will likely be quite expensive. See if there are other hikers around, and you may be able to split the cost.
From the City Center
The Pamplona bus station is easily walkable from the city center. Just note that it’s located underground when you try to find it. It’s a big glass building and says Estación de Autobuses de Pamplona at both entrances.
From there, you have a few options. The best is to take the Alsa bus straight to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Historically, Alsa only operates one bus per day at noon and only during popular hiking months. The journey will take around 1.5 to 2 hours.
You can check out the Alsa bus schedule, but know that they only release the schedule a month or so before they start running the route. As I write this in December, I’m not yet able to see the bus routes to SJPDP from Pamplona that will likely open around April 1 next year.
If the Alsa bus time doesn’t work for your schedule or you’re hiking at a different time of year, look into the Autocares Artieda bus. It runs from Pamplona to Roncesvalles Monday through Saturday leaving at 1:30 p.m. on weekdays and 4 p.m. on Saturdays. It does not run on Sundays or holidays.
From Roncesvalles, you can take an affordable taxi on to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
Note that if you’re sensitive to motion sickness, I’ve heard some folks feel it on the ride from Pamplona to SJPDP. I personally felt fine, but I don’t typically feel motion sickness unless a journey is very intense or I try to read.
Another option if you don’t feel like taking the bus is booking a taxi or private transfer all the way from Pamplona to SJPDP. It can be expensive, but look for others with backpacks and see if they’d like to split the cost.
How to Get to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port from Madrid

By Train
Many people take the train from Madrid to Pamplona. It’s about a three hour journey, and there are several trains from Madrid to Pamplona each day.
There are a number of ways to get from the airport to the train station.
When I studied abroad in Spain, I was a big fan of the Airport Express Bus 203 that takes you to the train station. Look for this yellow bus from airport terminals 1, 2, and 4. If you’re in terminal 3, you’ll have to take an airport bus to another terminal to reach it.
The bus is €5 and can be paid on the bus in cash, credit card, or contactless payment on your phone.
Alternately, from terminal 4, you can take a Cercanias short-distance train C1 or C10 to get to Atocha Train Station. Or from terminals 1, 2, and 3 you can get on Madrid’s metro system–there’s no direct route to the train station, so you will have to transfer. Use Google Maps to help you figure out the best route.
Lastly, you can take a taxi or book a private transfer from the airport to the train station if you want the easiest, but most expensive, option.

For a Stopover in San Sebastián
If you want to take my advice and spend a few days in San Sebastián, here’s how to get there from Bilbao.
From the airport, the easiest way is via bus. The Pesa bus runs directly from the airport to San Sebastián multiple times a day.
You can also get on a Pesa or Alsa bus to San Sebastián from the Bilbao Intermodal bus station in the city center.
Alternately, you can take the train to San Sebastián, but it’s quite slow. However, it’s a good backup to have just in case. When I arrived in Bilbao, it turned out the bus workers were on strike. I ended up getting a very expensive Uber with some other American girls I met, but I wish I had known about the train!
Of course, you can also book a private transfer to San Sebastián, but it will be quite expensive.
