Hiking San Juan de Gaztelugatxe Spain

One of my favorite hikes I’ve ever done and one of my favorite experiences in Spain was hiking San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (pronounced Gaz-te-lu-ge-che; try saying that three times fast) outside of Bilbao, Spain. It’s a beautiful hike past farms along the northern coast and then up steps to the top of the small peninsula sticking out into the water. For all you Game of Thrones fans, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe also has the added bonus of being the filming location for Dragonstone in more recent seasons!

Why Studying in Madrid or Barcelona won’t give you an Authentic Spanish Experience

Don’t get me wrong. Madrid and Barcelona are both very cool cities, both of which would be great places to live. But if you’re looking to study abroad and truly get to know Spanish culture, then you might want to reconsider these cities.

If you were studying abroad in the United States, would you go to New York City for an authentic American experience?Read More »

Last Monday I shared some tips on choosing the right study abroad program. Today, I’m going to go through the tips I shared in this last post and share with you why Sevilla ended up being the perfect study abroad choice for me.

Sevilla wasn’t actually the first program I had applied for. I initially applied to a program in Pamplona, Spain that’s through UNC’s School Media and Journalism. It just made sense to me. I’m studying journalism, I wanted to study in a Spanish-speaking country in Europe, and the MJ-School offered that with Pamplona. However, I didn’t end up getting in to the program. The only accepted one student for the semester I went abroad. While I was a little bummed out, I was immediately glad that I wasn’t the only person going. I’m not sure if I would’ve taken that offer. While I wanted to stay away from UNC-heavy programs like Sevilla so that I could meet more Spaniards, I wanted at least one other American with me!Read More »

The Rankings: Everywhere I Traveled While Abroad

While studying abroad in Spain this past semester, I traveled to two continents, 10 countries and 23 cities. Here is my list of the 23 cities I visited while in Europe, ranked from my favorite to my least favorite. If you’re thinking about going to any of these places, I hope that you find this list helpful, as I know I was surprised throughout some of my travels as I found that some cities that I thought would be my favorites (cough-Rome-cough) ended up being my least favorites and that some cities I had never heard of before ended up being some of my favorite places I visited.
